We only know Cleophas through the Gospel of Luke. He was one of the two disciples of Christ (the other is anonymous) who walked from Jerusalem to Emmaus, a city seven miles northwest, on the day of the Lord’s resurrection.
The two men were dejected and disillusioned by the terrible events of recent days. Jesus approached them, but their eyes could not recognize him. They spoke to him of their fears, and he spoke to them of what referred to him in all the Scriptures.
Invited to join Cleophas and his companion for their evening meal, Jesus reveals himself during the breaking of bread, then disappears. Cleophas and his friend announced the news to the other disciples, and Jesus appeared again to them all.
PRAYER: God, strengthen us in the faith that made Saint Cleophas such a faithful disciple of your Son Christ, and through his prayers, may the Church become a sign of salvation for all mankind. Amen.
