Born
in 1653, St. Pacific was orphaned very young and was raised by an
uncle. At the age of seventeen, he entered the Franciscan Order and, after his
ordination, he was assigned to the ministry of the mountain villages of the Apennines
in Italy.
After
a successful apostolate of about seven years, he was struck by a debilitating
illness and resigned himself at thirty as a semi-invalid. He transformed these years into an
intense apostolate of prayer and became famous for his patience, his austerity
and his gift of prophecy. He died in 1721 and was canonized in 1839 by Pope
Gregory XVI.
: God, Giver of all gifts, You adorned Saint Pacific with the virtue of an
unusual patience and the love of solitude. Through his intercession,
may we walk in his footsteps and obtain a similar reward.
Amen.
