It is said that Saint Giles was an Athenian of noble birth from the 6th/7th century. His piety and knowledge made him so remarkable and admired in his own country that, fearing praise and aspiring to a hidden life, he left his home and sailed for France. He first settled in a desert near the mouth of the Rhône, then near the Gard river and finally in the diocese of Nîmes.

The Saint spent many years in solitude, conversing only with God. The fame of his miracles became so great that his reputation spread throughout France. He was highly esteemed by the King of France, but he could not be persuaded to abandon his solitude. However, he allowed several disciples to share it with him, founded a monastery and established excellent discipline there. In the following centuries, it embraced the rule of Saint Benedict.

Saint Giles is one of the fourteen auxiliary saints invoked in times of emergency and affliction.

PRAYER: Lord, let us detach ourselves from the things of this world, let us wholeheartedly engage in heavenly things in imitation of the example of evangelical perfection that you have given us in Saint Giles the Abbot. Amen.
