On October 11, 1954, His Holiness Pope Pius XII, in his encyclical letter “Ad Caeli Reginam”, decreed and instituted the feast of the Queen of the Blessed Virgin Mary to be celebrated every year throughout the world. He declared that the Church had believed in Mary’s queenship since the early centuries and that this belief is based on Sacred Scripture and Tradition.
Mary is Queen of all “since she gave birth to a Son who, at the very moment He was conceived, was, because of the hypostatic union of human nature with the Word, even as Man, King and Lord of all things”. Furthermore, “just as Christ is our Lord and King in a special way because He redeemed us, so the Blessed Virgin [is our Lady and Queen] because of the unique way in which she cooperated in our redemption by giving of her own substance, offering it willingly for us, and desiring, praying for and achieving our salvation in a singular way”.
PRAYER: God, You have given us the Mother of Your Son to be Mother and Queen. Through her intercession, grant us to attain the glory destined for Your adoptive children in Your Kingdom of Heaven. Amen.
