August 21: Saint Pius X, Pope (257th) from 1903 to 1914 (+ 1914)

On
June 2, 1835, Giuseppe Sarto was born in Riese, Province of Treviso, Venice; on August 20, 1914, he saw the light of heaven; and on May 29, 1954, he who had become the 259th Pope was canonized Saint Pius X by his successor Pius XII.

Two
of the most remarkable achievements of this holy Pope were the inauguration of the liturgical renewal and the restoration of frequent communion from childhood. He also waged an unwavering war against heresy and the evils of modernism, gave great impetus to biblical studies, and brought about the codification of canon law. His primary concern was to renew all things in Christ.

Above all,
the holiness of Saint Pius X shone brilliantly. From him we still learn that “the folly of the Cross,” simplicity of life, and humility of heart are still the highest wisdom and the indispensable conditions of a perfect Christian life, for they are the very source of all apostolic fruitfulness.

The
saint’s last will and testament bears the striking phrase: “I was born poor, I lived in poverty, and I want to die poor”.

PRAYER:
God, to preserve the Catholic faith and renew all things in Christ, you filled Pope Saint Pius with heavenly wisdom and apostolic strength. Grant us to follow his guidance and example and to be rewarded with eternal life with You. Amen.
